Welcome to the world of extraordinary jobs!
Extraordinary jobs are dream jobs—the ones that you enjoy doing. The jobs you might take a pay cut to get, because of what they offer, whether it is a fantasy locale or opportunity to do the work you’ve wanted to do. Extraordinary jobs are the ones that you've read about, and wondered how people get them, and what the reality of those jobs is.
The site offers resources, information, and even free advice on how you can find the job that, until now, you’ve only dreamed of. If those dreams are vague, too vague to chase down right now, perhaps some of the ideas we present on jobs that we consider interesting, or on jobs in places that are out of the ordinary, will help you make them more concrete. It really doesn’t matter whether your dream is working for a nonprofit in India or Thailand, crewing on a yacht, or building dams in Africa, it all starts with understanding the requirements and how to get them under your belt. Not that it is easy; just that those dreams are not always the remote fantasies we think they are. So, here at Extraordinary Jobs, we try to help people turn their fantastic ideas into reality.
This site is based in the U.S., but just like the Internet, the writers venture around the world, sailing, working, and living. Sometimes all at the same time. Their experiences are diverse, and the opinions too. We offer something for everyone.
How to Use This Website We need to make it clear right up front that we are NOT a placement agency. We are here to help you find a job by giving you advice and resources. We are not in a position to give you a job. I hope that doesn't sound harsh, but I get a lot of e-mail from website users who want to apply for a job here. They seen to have missed the point of the website and newsletter entirely. We offer information, and we will also do what we can to help you find your way. The best way for you to ask for our assistance is to write us an e-mail.
Question and Answer If you would like to see what sort of questions people have already asked, or see if your question has already been answered, take a swing over to our Q&A page. When you write with a question, be sure to include: Where you are, where you are trying to go, what job you want, what qualifications you have for the job you want, if any. If you have any other info that might be helpful to us in searching out the answer to your question, include that too.
News If you would like to read our rather random collection of articles (extraordinary jobs cover a great deal of territory, after all), click on the news tab.
Contact Us If there is some information that we aren’t offering, or the way we are offering it doesn’t seem quite right to you, then click on the contact tab and shoot us an email, telling us what it is you need.
By the way, if some of the jobs don’t sound so extraordinary or fantastic to you, remember that we don’t dream the same. And that makes the world a more interesting place.

Extraordinary Jobs for Ordinary People

I have been in the social service field most of my adult life. I will turn 50 in July and I'd give just about anything to have a job I enjoyed and a lot less stress. None would be good! I love helping others. I see myself until retirement working as a professional companion/personal assistant to someone who wants to stay active, travel, active in their community. I'd like it to be in NC if possible. I live in St. Louis and hate it. I love the mountains of NC. So, have any thoughts, connections, a job for me? I want to enjoy what I do and get paid well for it. I want to be appreciated and needed.

WHITE HAVEN, Pa., May 4, 2010 -- Workplace conflict and office politics cost companies billions of dollars in lost productivity and health expenses due to stress. That doesn't have to be the case says workplace expert Sylvia Lafair, author of "Don't Bring It to Work" (Jossey Bass). The Wall Street Journal recently featured Lafair in an article about the universal issue of bad behavior in the workplace. She was interviewed by Sue Shellenbarger, April 28, 2010, "How Dad's Yelling Can Spawn an Office Tyrant." Why do tensions get so dialed up at work? And why don't they ever seem to stop? Because we have been looking in all the wrong places!
